Digital printing for custom coffee bags
Digital printing gives coffee roasters and brands more flexibility when creating custom printed coffee bags. Without the need for traditional printing plates, it makes smaller production runs more practical and allows brands to create packaging that is tailored to individual coffees, blends, or seasonal releases.
For specialty coffee, packaging often needs to communicate much more than a brand logo. Origin, producer, variety, processing method, roast profile, tasting notes, roast date, and other product information can all be incorporated directly into the artwork. QR codes, graphics, variable text, and other design elements can also be used to connect the physical package with additional information online.
This flexibility is particularly useful for coffee businesses managing multiple SKUs or testing new products. Different coffees can have their own artwork while maintaining a consistent visual identity across the product range. Digital printing also makes it easier to produce smaller quantities, making it a practical option for new brands, limited releases, seasonal coffees, and product testing.
Custom printing can also replace separately applied labels, creating a cleaner and more integrated package while reducing the need for additional label materials.
Depending on your coffee and packaging requirements, you can further customize your bags with:
- Different bag styles and sizes
- Different material structures, including recyclable and compostable options
- High-quality digital printing and special printing effects
- Matt, gloss, and other surface finishes
- Degassing valves and other functional features
- QR codes, variable information, and other printed details
- Different quantities for different products or SKUs
Frequently asked questions
Is there a limit to the number of colors for digital printing?
Digital printing does not require a separate printing plate or cylinder for each color, so there is no additional plate cost based on the number of colors in your artwork. It is well suited to full-color designs, gradients, photographs, and other detailed artwork.
Are there any plate or cylinder costs for digital printing?
No. Digital printing does not require engraved cylinders or traditional printing plates. Your artwork is printed directly onto the packaging material, so there are no cylinder or plate-making costs.
Is digital printing suitable for photographs and detailed artwork?
Yes. Digital printing is well suited to photographic images, gradients, fine details, illustrations, and other complex artwork. It gives coffee brands greater flexibility when creating visually detailed packaging without the need for engraved cylinders.
When should I choose digital printing instead of gravure printing?
Digital printing is generally a good choice for smaller production runs, multiple SKUs, frequent artwork changes, or designs that require a high level of flexibility. Gravure printing becomes more attractive for larger, repeat production runs where the initial cylinder cost can be spread across a higher volume.
Coffee packaging insights
Digging into the technical details
Our digital printing capabilities include HP Indigo 25K and HP Indigo 200K presses, both developed for flexible packaging production. Using HP Indigo’s liquid electrophotography (LEP) technology, these presses can reproduce fine details, smooth gradients, and complex artwork on compatible packaging substrates.
Consistent colour reproduction is especially important for coffee brands with multiple products or repeat orders. HP Indigo’s colour management and calibration capabilities help maintain print consistency against approved colour references, supporting a more uniform brand appearance across different packaging designs and production runs.
The HP Indigo 25K is a proven platform for flexible packaging printing, while the newer HP Indigo 200K provides higher productivity and additional capacity for digital printing projects with greater production requirements. Together, they give us flexibility to support different order volumes and artwork needs.
Depending on the packaging requirements, digital printing can be combined with suitable films and laminating processes to produce conventional high-barrier, kraft-based, and recyclable mono-material coffee bags. The final material structure is selected based on the required barrier performance, sealing properties, and intended application.
